The State of the City Address (SOCA) is an annual speech delivered by the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, providing an overview of the city’s current status, achievements, challenges, and future plans. It aligns with similar addresses at national and provincial levels, such as the State of the Nation Address (SONA) and the State of the Province Address (SOPA).
In 2024, Executive Mayor Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza delivered his maiden SOCA on 30 April 2024 at the OR Tambo Government Precinct (Formerly known as the Germiston Civic Centre). During this address, he outlined several key priorities for the city, including:
• Provision of quality and sustainable services to all residents.
• Rebuilding a strong financial base to support the city’s development.
• Conducting essential repairs and maintenance of public facilities.
• Investing in critical infrastructure in partnership with the private sector.
• Economic development, growth, and job creation, focusing on the aerotropolis and revitalization of the manufacturing sector.
• Preserving good and ethical governance.
These priorities are guided by the city’s Growth and Development Strategy 2055, which emphasises re-urbanisation, re-governance, re-mobilisation, re-generation, and re-industrialidsation.
